Jennifer Bartlett: New Paintings

  • Overview
Artemis · Greenberg Van Doren · Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new large-scale paintings by Jennifer Bartlett. The exhibition will be on view from November 8 - December 28, 2002.

Included in this exhibition are eight multi-panel paintings on canvas, which introduce Jennifer Bartlett's use of imaginary figures. Here the figures - the artist refers to them as 'monsters' - are larger-than-life characters that enact day-to-day narratives of work and play. Furthermore, these storylines have led to specific, asymmetrically shaped canvases that embrace the mischievous subject matter while adding a separate stratum to the narrative.

In this ongoing series, Bartlett uses the dot as her basic building block but nowhere are these dots ordered and uniform. Instead, the dots defy Bartlett's usual grid format and erupt into brilliantly colored spheres, shaping themselves into fluid backgrounds where the shadowy figures emerge.

A fully illustrated color catalogue will accompany the exhibition.
